Music

Music is a big deal in our house.  We listen to music about 95% of the time and when it’s not playing in our home then I usually hear someone singing.  Little Aaron loves music and Michael has the most beautiful voice, William can carry a beat and dances his little booty off.  I have always had an appreciation for all music.  I can tell you the name of the song and artist in a matter of seconds into a song. Adam well he is just crazy talented and I LOVE learning about new bands, sometimes I am not fond of his selection, but 9 times out of 10 I usually fall in the love with his new findings.  Music speaks to our families mode and recently we pulled out our old record player and have been having a blast building our record collection.  Here is one of our favorite bands!  I usually pair this music with some wine, snuggling on the sofa writing, lately it’s been really cold and so there is snow falling outside and a quite house with 3 little boys sleeping soundly in their beds.  Or I play this album while I am cooking in the kitchen.  Playing this album while cooking dinner changes the entire atmosphere and makes me want to break the rules in my recipes and create something of my own.  Music changes the way we think, the way we feel and I am so thankful for musicians like my husband!! Feel free to share you favorite albums, I LOVE to find new music, and even If I don’t like it at first I promise to try it again and like I said 9 times out of 10 I fall in love with a new group.

Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago” is a sparse collection of deeply personal songs on mostly guitar that weave together the story of love lost. There are unexpected moments of harsh vocal phrasing like on “Skinny Love” dispersed with lovely baritone. There’s a jazzy drum mash up on “The Wolves (Act I and II)” that, to me, sounds like a recording of a freight train at close range, but then dismantles into a crash of cymbals. It’s impossible for me to tell if he recorded a train en route and wove it into the song or if the drummer just mimics a train’s thump and wallow with startling accuracy. The singer-songwriter fronting the band is Justin Vernon originally intended to release the songs on “For Emma” as separate demos. Aren’t we glad that he did not?
Bon Inver derives its name from the French phrase “bon hiver” meaning “have a good winter.” He recorded “For Emma, Forever Ago” using nominal, dated recording equipment while he spent three months in a remote cabin in Wisconsin.
This is a soundtrack is not to be missed, especially for those late night winter strolls.
